Furniture Geek Newsletter Monthly News
  December 2008

What a great time of year this is, while I know it can be very stressful at times, over all I'd still have to say it is the best time of the year.  Family gatherings, Christmas Parties, Church get togethers, you name it and it seems this is the time of year to have a party for it.  Many of you will be entertaining this holiday season so along with our running theme on colors I thought I'd throw in a quick tip or two to help you decorate for your festive event.

This month I didn't feel right about highlighting just one color so below you'll find information on two which are???  You guessed it! Red and Green.  You can tell with all this Free information I'm already in the giving mood.

Spot Light-Red & Green

Red
The most emotionally intense color, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It is also the color of love. Red clothing gets noticed and makes the wearer appear heavier. Since it is an extreme color, red clothing might not help people in negotiations or confrontations. Red cars are popular targets for thieves. In decorating, red is usually used as an accent. Decorators say that red furniture should be perfect since it will attract attention.
The most romantic color, pink, is more tranquilizing. Sports teams sometimes paint the locker rooms used by opposing teams bright pink so their opponents will lose energy.

Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love.
Red is a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. It has very high visibility, which is why stop signs, stoplights, and fire equipment are usually painted red. In heraldry, red is used to indicate courage. It is a color found in many national flags.
Red brings text and images to the foreground. Use it as an accent color to stimulate people to make quick decisions; it is a perfect color for 'Buy Now' or 'Click Here' buttons on Internet banners and websites. In advertising, red is often used to evoke erotic feelings (red lips, red nails, red-light districts, 'Lady in Red', etc). Red is widely used to indicate danger (high voltage signs, traffic lights). This color is also commonly associated with energy, so you can use it when promoting energy drinks, games, cars, items related to sports and high physical activity.

Light red represents joy, sexuality, passion, sensitivity, and love.
Pink signifies romance, love, and friendship. It denotes feminine qualities and passiveness.
Dark red is associated with vigor, willpower, rage, anger, leadership, courage, longing, malice, and wrath.
Brown suggests stability and denotes masculine qualities.
Reddish-brown is associated with harvest and fall.

Green
Currently the most popular decorating color, green symbolizes nature. It is the easiest color on the eye and can improve vision. It is a calming, refreshing color. People waiting to appear on TV sit in "green rooms" to relax. Hospitals often use green because it relaxes patients. Brides in the Middle Ages wore green to symbolize fertility. Dark green is masculine, conservative, and implies wealth. However, seamstresses often refuse to use green thread on the eve of a fashion show for fear it will bring bad luck.
It symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety. Dark green is also commonly associated with money.
Green has great healing power. Green suggests stability and endurance. Sometimes green denotes lack of experience; for example, a 'greenhorn' is a novice. In heraldry, green indicates growth and hope. Green, as opposed to red, means safety; it is the color of free passage in road traffic.
Use green to indicate safety when advertising drugs and medical products. Since green is directly related to nature you can use it to promote 'green' products. Dull, darker green is commonly associated with money, the financial world, banking, and Wall Street.

Dark green is associated with ambition, greed, and jealousy.
Yellow-green can indicate sickness, cowardice, discord, and jealousy.
Aqua is associated with emotional healing and protection.
Olive green is the traditional color of peace.

Holiday Decorating Tips

-Candles candles candles, light scented candles (preferably a Holiday scent) in abundance in every room your guest will see and keep the lights off (with the exception of Christmas lights) to give off a warm cozy environment for your party.

-Don't forget to have a fire going in the fireplace and if you are in a warm climate create a candle arrangement in your fireplace and light them.

-For small intimate or family gatherings place an ornament on the tree that represents each guest who is coming to the party in a positive way.  It could be something like a small framed picture memory you share with them or a poem written and placed in a clear ornament.  The best way to get the reaction you want is to get your imagination into it and work backwards.  What I mean is think of something that will make them smile and figure out how you can make it into an ornament.  For a lighthearted example you have a picture of you and your friend in Vegas right after some guy at the Craps table gave her $500.00 for being his "Lucky Charm" find a $ sign picture frame, place the picture in it and hang it on the tree.  This will be a great conversation starter and you'll have your guest engaging in fond memories you share with them all, they will leave your get together praising you for the best party of the season.

Add these suggestions to your current decorations and be prepared to hear how great your home looks from your guests
